A conclave was convened on 12 March 2013 to elect a pope to succeed Benedict XVI, who had resigned on 28 February. 115 participating cardinal-electors gathered.
On the fifth ballot,[1] the conclave elected Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, SJ, Archbishop of Buenos Aires. He took the pontifical name Francis.

On 11 February 2013, Benedict XVI announced his resignation from the papacy effective 28 February 2013 at 20:00 local time (19:00 UTC).[2][3][4] He was the first pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415,[5] and the first to do so of his own volition since Celestine V in 1294.[6][7]
